Basketball Alberta partners to provide elite training opportunities for Edmonton area Girls this fall:

Basketball Alberta is excited to kickoff the fall programming announcements!  Basketball Alberta has secured several partnerships to provide a number of elite training opportunities this upcoming September for girls in the Edmonton area. 

Senior Academy, Junior Academy, and Training Academy

The Senior and Junior Academy this fall will be coached and organized through the well known “Panthawk Academy”, a local elite development training academy.  Panthawks started as a partnership between Dave Oldham, then coaching the Panthers in Spruce Grove, and John Dedrick, the longtime coach of the Skyhawks in St. Albert. Dave and John have a long history of coaching in the Edmonton area, including Dave as the head coach of the MacEwan Griffins in 2015-16 and John entering his second year as an Assistant with the University of Alberta Pandas after assisting at MacEwan under coach Rob Poole.  Combining the resources of Basketball Alberta and the Panthawk Academy will put the best coaches and athletes together to create a learning environment that is a win win for all involved.

In an effort to expand the opportunity for young athletes to be involved in elite programming, we are launching our Training Academy for the fall of 2017.  Athletes who are not selected into the Senior/Junior Academies will be placed in the Training Academy.  Through the Panthawk Academy, we are extremely fortunate to have partnered with head coach Todd Warnick and his NAIT Ooks women’s program to provide the training for this group of athletes. The NAIT Ooks, under the leadership of Todd have been perennial contenders both provincially and nationally over the past 5 years, having most recently placed 4th at the 2017 CCAA National Championships. Coach Warnick, his staff, and the Ooks Women’s team will be the on court coaches for this program.  

The Junior Academy is for athletes ages 12 and 13, while the Senior Academy is for athletes aged 14-17. Training Academy will be for 12-17 year olds.  The Training Academy group will work together however, be divided by age when appropriate for training.  

Registration for tryouts is now available!   Program fees will be $375.  All tryout participants must be Basketball Alberta members.

All Academies will run on Sunday afternoons for 9 sessions starting on Sunday September 10th, and ending on Sunday November 12th. We will not run sessions on Thanksgiving weekend.

We are very fortunate to have former National Team Coaches, and longtime CIS/NCAA Coaches Allison and Mike McNeill joining us for the weekend of September 16th and 17th.  Allison and Mike are well known in the Edmonton area as they have worked with the Panthawk Academy in the past.  All athletes in our programming will get 2 hours on court with Allison and Mike as part of the regular training for the weekend.  Regular scheduled training times may be adjusted to fit with the scheduling for this weekend!
