Coaches with Team Alberta roots will be part of national teams in 2019

Three coaches that have worked with Team Alberta will be part of the coaching staffs for national teams in 2019.

On Dec. 7, 2018, Canada Basketball announced the following appointments:

  • Erin McAleenan will serve as assistant coach of Team Canada at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand, on July 20-28, 2019
  • Nate McKibbon will serve as assistant coach of Team Canada at the FIBA U16 Women's Americas Championship 2019 (date / location TBD)
  • Claire Meadows will serve as head coach of Team Canada at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand, on July 20-28, 2019

 

Erin McAleenan - head coach of the Alberta U17 Girls’ Provincial Team from 2011 to 2013

McAleenan is the head coach of the women's basketball program at York University and prior to that spent three seasons as head coach at the University of Lethbridge. This will be McAleenan’s fourth year coaching Team Canada after being an assistant coach with the Development Women’s National team in 2011. The following year, she was an apprentice coach with the Senior Women’s National Team.

 

Nathan McKibbon - head coach of Alberta’s U15 program in 2018

McKibbon spent the past four years as the women’s basketball head coach at Mount Royal University. Before Mount Royal, McKibbon was an assistant coach at McMaster University from 2004-07 and 2014-15. This will be McKibbon’s fourth year with Team Canada after he served as an assistant coach with the Development Women’s National Development team that finished seventh at the 2017 Summer Universiade. He also was a performance analyst with the Junior National Team in 2014 and 2015 that finished 8th at the FIBA U19 Women's World Championship.

 

Claire Meadows - head coach of the Alberta U15 Provincial Team in 2015 and the Alberta Centre for Performance from 2013 to 2015

Currently an assistant coach with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, Meadows spent three seasons as head coach at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. As an assistant coach with Team Canada, Meadows helped Canada secure a historic bronze medal at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2017 and a silver medal at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Women's Championship.
