Mar. 01, 2024

Alberta Basketball Association (ABA) is bolstering its Board of Directors with the addition of two prominent figures in the basketball community.

ABA announced Friday that Marty Birky and Reed Clarke have been appointed directors at large, bringing a wealth of experience to the board.

“I am excited to have Marty and Reed joining the board of directors as they are both well known in the Alberta basketball community," says Dave Drabiuk, Executive Director of ABA. "They each bring a unique skill set and a variety of basketball leadership experiences that will only help to enrich the board.”

During Birky’s eight years as head coach of the SAIT men’s basketball team, the Trojans won six Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) titles. In 2023 he guided SAIT to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship while receiving the Coaching Excellence Award from both the CCAA and ACAC.

“I'm truly honoured to join the ABA Board," Birky says. "I am excited to get to work to continue to advance the sport of basketball in Alberta and provide more opportunities and exposure for the athletes and coaches in Alberta.”

Clarke is founder and chair of the Fresh Nets Foundation, a community initiative installing new basketball nets on outdoor courts around Alberta and beyond. Previously, Clarke served as President, CEO and co-owner with the Edmonton Stingers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).

"I'm excited to be joining the board of such a storied and respected organization like Basketball Alberta," says Clarke. "Basketball is such an important sport to this province with the participation numbers never being higher. I look forward to working with Basketball Alberta in the future to grow the game from the grassroots to the professional level."

Additionally, ABA announced that Jason Kerswill has stepped down from his role as president of the Board of Directors. Chad Bowie will serve as acting president on an interim basis.
